Cryogenic testing of structural components under thermal gradients
The CRYOGRADE project is developing a unique test facility in Europe to perform cryogenic tests of structural components under thermal gradients.
Structural components in space applications may experience large thermal gradients during operation. Structural items coupling cold components (e.g. cryo-tanks or cryo-instruments) to room temperature or even hot components (e.g. engine frame or spacecraft primary structure) are subject to significant thermo-mechanical loads, which need to be reproduced in a laboratory environment to obtain reliable test results that can help design and certification.
The test facility developed in the CRYOGRADE project will enable the thermo-mechanical testing of structural components at temperatures ranging from 60K to 360K.
The CRYOGRADE project is an activity carried out under a program of, and funded by, the European Space Agency.
